When God Feels Silent
My Journey from Addiction to Redemption
The Silence That Felt Like Abandonment
In the darkest moments of my life, it often felt as if God was silent. My childhood was shaped by the church, thanks to my Godparents, but that foundation crumbled when I entered foster care. As I got older and turned to drugs, I distanced myself further from God, feeling as though He had forgotten me.
During those years of addiction, I found myself lost and searching for meaning in all the wrong places. The nights spent high on drugs led me to strange beliefs that I convinced myself were true. I believed that God was not a personal being, but rather an impersonal force—something like gravity that simply held the universe together. But deep down, I was still empty.
In the silence of my mind, I was consumed by hopelessness and despair, even to the point of suicidal thoughts and intentionally overdosing. It seemed like the only escape.
The Moment I Encountered God’s Presence
Then, one day, everything changed. I was staying with a friend whose family was Catholic, and something caught my attention: the Bible. I saw it on the mother's nightstand, open, as if waiting for me. That moment was small, but it stirred something deep within me.
I had no idea what would happen, but I decided to listen to worship music that night. The melodies were unfamiliar, but they touched a part of me I thought was long gone. God was speaking to me, even though I didn’t fully understand it at the time.
Scripture reminds us that God’s presence is not confined to our understanding or circumstances. In Psalm 34:18, it says, "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."
God Speaks in His Own Time
As I started to lean into the peace of those worship songs, I felt the silence of God that I had once interpreted as His abandonment, begin to shift. I realized that His silence was not absence but a call to move closer to Him. God was waiting for me to choose to listen, even when I felt unworthy.
The Bible also speaks to this, as Isaiah 55:6 encourages, "Seek the Lord while He may be found; call on Him while He is near." Even when we feel alone, God is near, patiently waiting for us to turn to Him.
A New Beginning: Surrendering My Life to Jesus
That night of worship led me to surrender my life to Jesus. The pain, the lies, and the addiction no longer had control over me. I gave my heart to Him, and not long after, I entered rehab. That decision changed everything for me. It was the beginning of the true healing and restoration I had longed for.
Matthew 11:28-30 offers a beautiful invitation from Jesus: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
God’s silence, I realized, wasn’t abandonment. It was His grace, giving me space to reach rock bottom so that I could fully surrender and embrace His redemptive love.
When God Feels Silent: A Word of Encouragement
If you're going through a season where God feels silent, know this: He hasn’t left you. His silence is not a sign of His absence, but a chance for you to draw closer to Him. It’s in those quiet moments that we often encounter the deepest truths. God is always near, even when you can’t feel Him.
Remember that Romans 8:28 assures us, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose."
So, even in the silence, trust that God is working. His love never fails, and He will never forsake you.
The Power of God's Redemption
Looking back, I see how God was at work all along. He was there in my addiction, in the silence, and in my brokenness. He was quietly drawing me back to Himself. And when I finally turned to Him, He welcomed me with open arms.
Psalm 30:5 reminds us, “Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.” God’s silence doesn’t last forever. His love always finds us, even in our darkest hours.
If you’re in the midst of silence, hold on. God’s timing is perfect, and He will speak to you in the way you need when the moment is right.
The Silent Work of God
God’s silence in my life was a necessary part of my journey. It was in the depths of silence and despair that I found the loudest call of grace — and it changed everything. My story is proof that no one is too far gone for God to reach, and no silence is final when He is at work.
If you're struggling, know that God is present, even in the quiet. His voice is still there, waiting to lead you back to the fullness of His love.
What’s Your Next Step?
If you’re in a season where God feels distant, I want to encourage you to seek Him anyway. Open His Word, spend time in prayer, and worship even when you don’t feel like it. God is listening, even when He seems silent.
